ELPS Department and District Partners Secure TEA Grants<http://education.utsa.edu/awards_announcements/article/elps_department_an...>
The Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies (ELPS) in partnership with two local school districts, Northside ISD and North East ISD, secured the 2018/19 Texas Education Agency (TEA) Principal Preparation grant. Each of the two districts was awarded more than $100,000. The competitive grant, which was open to all the districts in the state, will provide participants with substantial funding (tuition/fees and textbook expenses) and will also pay for other general program operating costs. A select cadre of highly qualified and talented educators will participate in a one-year principal residency certification program offered in collaboration between the ELPS department and the two districts. The ELPS professors leading the partnership efforts are:
1) Dr. Bruce Barnett and Dr. Nathern Okilwa for Northside ISD
2) Dr. David Thompson and Dr. Curtis Brewer for North East ISD

GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP for Upward Bound Programming<http://education.utsa.edu/awards_announcements/article/graduate_assistant...>
We are looking for two graduate students for graduate assistantships working with the TRIO Upward Bound Program. The graduate assistantship will be for 19 hours per week beginning June 1, 2018. Program Dates are June 11 - July 20.
Description of Job Duties
1. Deliver quality academic assistance to high school students during Summer Academic Program June 11-July 20
2. Accompany students on bus rides to and from high school campus to UTSA Main Campus
3. Assist Retention Specialists’ track students’ academic progress
4. Attend all staff meetings and training sessions to discuss student progress and tutoring needs
5. Perform other duties as assigned
Other Skills Preferred:
1. Good interpersonal and organizational skills
2. Must be responsible, flexible and maintain a professional attitude
Qualifications
Applicants must be current graduate students in the College of Education and Human Development. Candidates must maintain enrollment in at least three hours of graduate course credit during summer 2018. Candidates must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in graduate work, or if entering the program, a 3.0 GPA in the last 60 hours of undergraduate work. Successful experience in working with students in a helping relationship is desirable; experience in use of computers is required.
Salary
Candidates may be paid $11.99/ hour.

Mexican American Studies (MAS) program at UTSA invites your schools to participate in our 2018 MAS Social Studies and Literature Teachers’ Academy June 25-29, 2018.
The Academy engages secondary teachers in intellectually oriented readings, workshops, and discussions to increase content knowledge and pedagogical skills to integrate the Mexican American experience for Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills in social studies as well as meet the specific content area for Mexican American Studies as a special topics course.
In addition, the Academy will be held at UTSA’s Institute of Texan Cultures offering teachers a special tour to explore classroom resources inspired by ITC’s newest exhibit Los Tejanos. The MAS Social Studies Teachers’ Academy provides professional development hours/credit.

Tri-Campus Natural Gas Testing Begins May 14<http://education.utsa.edu/awards_announcements/article/tri_campus_natural...>
Natural gas to Tri-Campus buildings will be shut down in small segments for testing, as mandated by the State Fire Marshal, between May 14, 2018 and July 31, 2018. The shutdowns will affect comfort heating, domestic hot water, autoclaves, kitchen equipment using natural gas and emergency generators. The exact date and time of each shut down, including a twelve-hour shut down of natural gas service to West Campus buildings on June 30, 2018, will be coordinated with building occupants prior to shut downs and testing. Only natural gas will be impacted by this testing, all other utilities including compressed gas will remain operational and available for use. For additional information reference the list below or contact the Facilities Service Center at 458-4262.

May 2018 Commencement: Faculty Participant Instructions for Ceremony 1

Dear Faculty Member Participating in Commencement:
Thank you for your positive response to Dr. C. Mauli Agrawal's memorandum inviting your participation in the University's May 2018 Commencement.
The faculty for the College of Education and Human Development, College of Sciences, and University College will need to assemble no later than 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at the Alamodome.
The Commencement ceremony processional will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. in the Alamodome.
A preliminary program/instruction sheet is attached for your reference that includes information on shuttle service being provided for all faculty participants. Shuttles will be provided from both the Main and Downtown campuses for all faculty. Please be sure to arrive no later than 8:30 a.m. to ride the shuttle to the Alamodome. The shuttle will also leave the ceremony no later than 12:30 p.m.
Enter the Alamodome through the South entrance loading dock (see attached layout). You will pass through a security check-point and will be subject to a bag check and security scan prior to entering the building.
The faculty participants will robe in Meeting Room C/D on the lowest level. There will be signs and UTSA Ambassadors to assist you.

The City of San Antonio will close a portion of S. Frio Street, near the UTSA Downtown Campus, from Sunday, May 6, 2018 at 3:30 p.m. until Monday, May 7, 2018 at 7:00 a.m. Paving operations on S. Frio St. will occur from south of W. Cesar E. Chavez Blvd. to north of W. Houston St. The closure is part of the city’s ongoing project to improve vehicle and pedestrian routes in the area. For additional information, please refer to the attached information sheet provided by the city’s Transportation and Capital Improvements department. Marcy Wilburn, service coordinator for the Center for the Inquiry of Transformative Literacies, visited the University of the Incarnate Word to give a special presentation to Dr. Danielle Alsandor's graduate class. Wilburn shared with the class some of the work the center is doing in the San Antonio community, including the La Plaza Roadrunner Readers program, the San Antonio Writing Project, the outreach literacy camps, and the center's professional development and research projects.

Call for Applications: Associate Dean of Research and Faculty Development

Dear Colleagues,
I hope this email finds you well. I am attaching the revised position description for the Associate Dean of Research and Faculty Development. I hope to identify a candidate by early June, and that person will have the opportunity to meet with Dr. Nora over the summer to be debriefed on our research portfolio, etc.
This position has been re-imagined in order to reflect the new scope of the role and responsibilities of the Associate Dean given current initiatives and trends . The Associate Dean of Research and Faculty Development will play a key role in the college's expansion of our external funding and the development and support of faculty in these areas.
If you are interested in applying for the position:
Please send a letter of intent that outlines your understanding of the position and what it requires from a college and university perspective, as well as your vision for its development, speaking specifically to where you see the greatest needs and the greatest assets that we can leverage for success. Please include brief discussion on where you see the college in 5 years vis a vis research . A description of your ability to be successful in this role and what positions you to be the right fit should also be included. Please submit your current CV with the letter.

Congratulations to Dr. Nora

Dear Colleagues,
Please join me in congratulating Dr. Nora on his very deeply thought out decision to step down from his role as Associate Dean for Research at the end of this year. Dr. Nora has successfully served in this role since 2010 and has guided the college as it has grown its research portfolio. This was a difficult decision for Dr. Nora. He has been an incredible resource to the COEHD and to me during my first years here at UTSA, however, he has decided to focus attention on the Center for Research and Policy in Education which is positioned to play a significant role as we move forward under Dr. Eighmy's leadership. Dr. Nora has been instrumental in developing the research infrastructure in COEHD and we look forward to building on the strong foundation that is in place as we set and reach new goals related to research and faculty development. I have appreciated his collegiality, his expertise, and his feedback and look forward to continued collaborations with him.
I know that he will be missed in the Dean's office, but I also know that his expertise and strengths will bring great success and growth to the Center and his role in that endeavor will have a great impact on the college, university, and community.
I will be soliciting applications for the revised Associate Dean position and hope to identify a candidate who can work with Dr. Nora over the summer on transition.
