Programming Bootcamps for Pre-service Teachers

Hi everyone,
The EDGE CS Education Group is offering four FREE programming bootcamps over next several weeks. These are quick two-hour introductions to programming in Python. These workshops are targeted towards secondary pre-service math and science teachers who want to gain some programming knowledge to complement their content areas. But all UTSA students (including faculty and staff) are welcome to join us. With the exception of our Python II bootcamp, no prior programming experience is required.
The attached flyer has the QR code/links to register for our bootcamp. Please distribute to your students. We will be offering more programming bootcamps after spring break, so stay tuned for more info.

Due to the weather, we are going to postpone Heart Walk to Thursday, February 14th at 10am. The windchill is forecast to be below freezing with a slight chance of rain so rather than risk it we will move the walk to next week on Valentine's Day!

Urbino, Italy Study Abroad - Fall 2019<http://education.utsa.edu/awards_announcements/article/urbino_italy_study...>
There's still time to consider joining the College of Education and Human Development for the Fall 2019 Study Abroad experience in Urbino, Italy! Students will take courses with UTSA professors and engage in service learning in Urbino public schools, work with English language or Spanish language teachers, and observe content area courses. Undergraduate students will be able to complete 12 Semester Credit Hours (SCH) of coursework related to teacher preparation and Graduate students will be able to complete 6 – 9 SCH of courses related to multilingual, multicultural contexts and education.

Sensitive Document Shredding — February 13, 2019<http://education.utsa.edu/awards_announcements/article/sensitive_document...>
As part of RecycleMania, Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management will provide sensitive document shredding services for the UTSA community on Wednesday February 13, 2019, between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm.
Bring your documents to the parking lot between the Student Union (HUC) and Ximenes Avenue Garage and slide your documents into the giant dumpster from Republic Services. Shredding will take place at their secured site. You can bring work-related or personal documents from home to shred.
At Downtown Campus and ITC, please box your documents and seal them. EHSRM will make one trip between noon and 1 pm to each location to pick them up. You can also take your boxed and sealed documents to the Downtown Mail Room earlier in the day, and they will store them inside their secured fence.
* Employees must comply with UTSA's Record Retention Schedule, so please only bring documents not covered by this policy.

The annual UT System Heart Walk will be held on Friday, February 8th at 10:00am for 10 minutes at all three campuses. The Heart Walk is a great way to get moving and show your support for Heart Health Month.
If you are at Main Campus, we will meet at the Paseo del Norte side of the North Paseo Building. Downtown Campus will meet at the Bill Miller Plaza by the Frio Street Building and ITC will meet in front of the museum flagpoles. You will receive a UT System Heart Walk Pin. Also, SECC will have a table and take donations during the walk so don't forget to bring your spare change.

Recyclemania is a nationwide intercollegiate contest designed to help our universities and communities become better stewards of the environment. The friendly annual competition runs for eight weeks, beginning in February. The school that recycles the most material per capita wins the competition—however, we all win because we achieve a greener environment.
A successful recycling program requires education, promotion, teamwork, and the participation of the entire community. The success of our program at UTSA depends on your cooperation!
Please, before throwing away items, consider those recyclable products that can be disposed of in the blue recycling containers. These include paper, cardboard, plastics, and aluminum cans. Items that go into trash bins include items such as food, liquids, used napkins and facial tissues, coffee grounds, and styrofoam.

The 5 Interactive Question Types in Google Slides
There are 5 Interactive Slides or Question types. They allow you to ask every student for their answers, opinions, ideas and creativity. When you ask students a question through Pear Deck, every student answers on his or her own screen. You can choose to display answers anonymously on the projector screen and you can see each individual answer on your Teacher Dashboard. Faculty Development Leave (FDL) Program Updates

Dear Faculty,
I hope you are enjoying the warmth and colors of this wonderful San Antonio Winter!
I am writing you regarding important updates related to the Faculty Development Leave (FDL) Program.
In the guidelines, it was not clear if faculty with active sponsored grants (e.g., from the NSF) were eligible to apply. We checked with several people at the College and University level, including the Provost, and they confirmed that faculty with such external grants are indeed eligible to apply.
We are therefore reopening the application for the FDL Program. Please work with your Department Chair in order to have the files submitted to the FDL Committee by Friday February 15, 5:00pm.
For clarity, the revised sentence in the guidelines now includes “COEHD/UTSA”:
A faculty member who has received a COEHD/UTSA Faculty Research Award/Grant for the period from June 1, 2019 to May 31, 2020, is not eligible for a Faculty Development Leave
Per the HOP (http://www.utsa.edu/hop/chapter2/2-25.html), 2.25.IX.C.2.b.i:
A faculty member who has active sponsored grants, contracts or other agreements must include a written plan for covering their sponsored program duties when participating in the Program. A copy of this plan must be approved by the vice president for research or designee.
If you have a sponsored grant, please make sure to include this file in your application.
I want to thank Dr. Michael Karcher for bringing to our attention this important matter and working closely with the FDL Committee throughout the process.

C-SPAN bus is coming Feb. 13

Dear Colleagues,
I wanted to let you know that the C-SPAN bus will be visiting the UTSA Downtown Campus on Feb. 13 from 10 a.m. to noon. It’s going to be parked in the Frio Street Circle and it will have a variety of interesting resources to share with UTSA students, faculty and staff.
Attached is a photo of the 45-foot bus. The goal of the bus is to encourage individuals to get involved in the political process, regardless of their beliefs.

Emotions play an important role in our daily lives. Positive emotions, in particular, have a strong biological influence on cardiovascular functioning, oxytocin levels, and gene expression within our immune cells. In this workshop, Dr. Barbara Fredrickson, one of the leading scholars in the positive psychology field, will share her latest theory and findings on how positive emotions are essential to (a) enhancing health, (b) sustaining lifestyle changes, and (c) creating positive connections with others. At a time when emotional distress and social isolation are epidemic, this workshop is particularly important for healthcare professionals and other individuals interested in learning about effective strategies for helping our clients moderate stress and become more socially connected.
Dr. Fredrickson will explain the specifics of how emotional and physical health influence each other. She will discuss the process of leveraging this knowledge to foster the behavior changes pivotal for improved mental and physical health. She will also show us how even fleeting moments of positive social connection with others can benefit us. Our daily diets of positive social connections influence how we grow and change, making us healthier and more resilient. Dr. Fredrickson describes how our heart’s capacity for connection can be accurately measured and strengthened, and offers practical ways these discoveries can be applied in daily life to promote individual and communal well-being.
Course Objectives:
* Identify the biological profiles that are associated with habitual positive emotions and how they may support physical health.
* Describe why and how to leverage positive emotions to support sustained behavior change.
* Describe how positivity resonates between and among people, creating micro-moments of shared positivity, biological and behavioral synchrony, and mutual care.
* Identify aspects of well-being that are influenced by positive emotions and positive connection.

Barbara L. Fredrickson, Ph.D. is Kenan Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience and Director of the Positive Emotions and Psychophysiology Lab (a.k.a. PEP Lab) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She received her Ph.D. in psychology from Stanford University, with a minor in organizational behavior.
Among the most highly cited and influential scholars in psychology, her research has been cited by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NCI, NIA, NCCAM, NIMH, NINR). Dr. Fredrickson has published >100 peer-reviewed articles and her general audience books, Positivity (2009, Crown, www.PositivityRatio.com<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.Posit...>) and Love 2.0 (2013, Penguin, www.PositivityResonance.com<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.Posit...>) have been translated into more than a dozen languages.

Dr. Fredrickson also served as President of the International Positive Psychology Association from 2015-2017. Her work has influenced scholars and practitioners worldwide, within education, business, healthcare, the military, and beyond, and she is regularly invited to give keynotes nationally and internationally.
