Please mark your calendars for March 8-11th, and stay tuned for information on the agenda and registration in early November. xTECH BRAIN OPERANT LEARNING TECHNOLOGY (BOLT) PRIZE COMPETITION This e-mail is to notify the research community of the JPC-1, MSISRP xTech Brain Operant Learning Technology – xTechBOLT – prize competition. The prize competition is designed to incentivize industry to develop and demonstrate the use of various cutting-edge imaging technologies to locate, track, and trace key learning traits that might be, in turn, developed to promote optimal retention and access to memories. The goals for this competition are to understand the effects of emotion and empathy on learning and memory and the functional roles played by various brain regions and their mutual interactions in relation to emotional and empathetic processing and effect on both implicit and explicit learning. The deadline for the submission of a concept white paper and an accompanying short video is October 16, 2020 after which subsequent winners will be afforded the opportunity to pitch their specific technology in front of a panel later this year at the planned virtual Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education (I/ITSEC) Conference. The prize pool for the competition is currently allotted at one million dollars, with portions of the money scheduled to be distributed to winners of each progressive stage of the competition. The first-place winner will receive 500 thousand dollars in prize money as they embark on efforts to further develop their chosen technology. Researchers: Note changes related to research expenditures and practices, effective October 2020, and Fall workshops

Dear Colleagues, I am sharing information from the Research and Business Affairs offices related to research expenditures. Earlier this year, UTSA implemented spending restrictions in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Some restrictions and approvals have been lifted or adjusted, as noted below. Non-Salary Expenditures for FY21 Expenditures: The additional vice president and Resource Management Team approvals implemented earlier this year are no longer required. Credit cards: As of October 1, OneCard can be used for purchasing, travel and official occasions, as allowed by the cardholder profile. OneCard replaces Procard and CLIBA Cards. Contact PTCA if you have questions. Travel: Travel restrictions will continue through December 31, with the potential for extension as needed. During this time, no university-sponsored international travel is permitted unless deemed mission-critical or health-critical as approved by the travel oversight committees. Research Practices: Undergraduates Engaged in Research. Undergraduates may be engaged in research on campus or in face-to-face human research in the community as long as your Associate Dean for Research is aware. This includes work-study students involved in research that is not conducted remotely. Their involvement on campus must be closely monitored with strong guidance and mentorship. Please be ready to accommodate a move to remote work if conditions change. Face-to-face Human Subjects Research. The IRB has implemented a sub-committee review to support restarting face-to-face human subjects research. The subcommittee includes input from the UTSA chief medical officer to evaluate COVID-19-related risk and exposure and suggest protective methods during the research project. If you log in to the link below, and click on the “My Proposals” Tab, the option for “Intake Form” pops up. I want to share with you few changes in research IT toolkit that will be introduced on Monday, 10/05. 1. New proposal intake form link will replace old Wufoo forms links on research website. New routing form (Routing Form 2.0) will be introduced to all users on Monday and we highly encourage all to use it. Old routing form will phase out by October 20th, until then it will be available for use. (Tutorial links to follow soon) 4. Sponsored project reports (My Projects) is an interactive tool that can be used to search and view award milestones, budget and available balance in budget accounts, employees allocated and paid on project, project F&A rates, and shared credit percentages.
