The Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies received an award for Outstanding College Partnership from Communities in Schools - San Antonio. The award recognized the ELL Tutoring/Mentoring Program, which was a service learning project for the ESL 3023 and 3063 classes. Tatiary Ozuna, who tutored at Carrillo Elementary School in the South San Antonio Independent School District, received the College Student Volunteer of the Year Award from Communities in Schools - San Antonio. Candlelight Vigil Tomorrow Evening for Victims of the Orlando Massacre

I would like to share information about the Candlelight Vigil<https://www.facebook.com/events/958397290949435/> in remembrance of the Orlando Massacre Victims.
The event is sponsored by the Pride Center of San Antonio<http://pridecentersa.org>, whose mission is to serve the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and HIV communities by connecting them and their families to community resources and organizations related to health, wellness, support, education, activities, and advocacy. I serve as member of the Board of Directors and thus feel it is my obligation to share the details so that those who wish to join the LGBT community can.
Attached to this email is a graphic that has the names of those we lost on that day, as well as the vigil details which I am also including in the body of this email.

Time: Thursday, June 16, 2016 7:00 p.m.

The family of the late Dr. Paul Westmeyer, including his daughter, grandson, and great grandchildren, visited the College of Education and Human Development's Dean's Office this week. Westmeyer served as the college's associate dean for Graduate Studies and Research until his passing in 2006. His wood carving work can be found displayed in the Main Campus Dean's Office.

The number of children ages 5 to 17 in the U.S. who speak a language other than English at home has more than doubled in the past three decades. These home languages are an asset that should be valued, and research shows that supporting bilingualism from early ages can have wide ranging benefits, from cognitive and social advantages early in life, to long-term employment opportunities and competitiveness in the workplace. This statement is part of ED's ongoing commitment to ensure that dual language learners, including immigrants and refugees, have access to high quality supports, which is especially important as we celebrate Immigrant Heritage Month.

I am writing to encourage you to participate in the 2017 AERA Annual Meeting. The Annual Meeting will be held Thursday, April 27 - Monday, May 1 in San Antonio, Texas. Vivian L. Gadsden, AERA President, Angela E. Arzubiaga, Annual Meeting Program Co-Chair, James Earl Davis, Annual Meeting Program Co-Chair, and the 2017 Program Committee, are pleased to announce this year's Annual Meeting Theme: "Knowledge to Action: Achieving the Promise of Equal Educational Opportunity". Now is the time to advance a paper or session submission for consideration by a division, special interest group, or committee and to volunteer as a chair or discussant.
Deadline for Paper and Session Submissions is July 22

Grant Writing Training Opportunity

Dear COEHD Faculty:
I received an announcement from the Dean of Graduate Studies regarding a professional development opportunity for our graduate students. As part of the new professional development focus and vision of The Graduate School, they will be providing weekly training sessions on writing grant proposals throughout the summer months. These sessions are to be progressive, meaning students will have specific goals to reach on their proposal for each session. By the end of the summer sessions, students will be prepared to submit their proposal for funding consideration.
These sessions are intended for students planning to submit grant proposals during the coming fall 2016 semester. Students who participate in the summer sessions and submit a grant proposal will receive a fellowship from The Graduate School. Please submit names of students from your department and program areas to participate in this training no later than June 17, 2016. Submit names (along with student ID and email address) to John Shaffer, john.shaffer(a)utsa.edu. The Grant Proposal Training is a collaborative initiative with The Graduate School and The Office of The Vice President for Research. Please encourage any interested graduate student to apply for this training opportunity.

Dear Colleagues,
I am writing to let you know of the passing on of Jerome Bruner at the age of 100.
He was a renaissance scholar, with books and articles broadly conceived on the psychology of human development,
creativity, culture and education, writing, and more, on the faculty at the New School for Social Research in New York City.
His intellectual breadth and energy incorporated philosophy and historical perspective. He was a member of many distinguished societies including
the National Academy of Education.
We have lost a giant who made his mark on so many fields of study. He will be missed by many.
