The American Educational Research Association (AERA) announces its 2017–2018 AERA Minority Dissertation Fellowship in Education Research competition for graduate students. This program provides mentoring and funding support to develop research skills and conduct studies in education related fields and topics.
An informational webinar will be offered on Thursday, September 22, 2016 (3:00pm – 4:00pm EST) in order to discuss the Minority Fellowship in Education Research program’s goals, the application process, and details about the competition. AERA Minority Dissertation Fellowship in Education Research

The American Educational Research Association (AERA) is pleased to announce the AERA Minority Dissertation Fellowship in Education Research. The Council of the AERA established the fellowship program to provide support for doctoral dissertation research, to advance education research by outstanding minority graduate students, and to improve the quality and diversity of university faculties. This fellowship is targeted for members of racial and ethnic groups historically underrepresented in higher education (e.g., African Americans, Alaskan Natives, American Indians, Asian Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, and Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islanders). This program offers doctoral fellowships to enhance the competitiveness of outstanding minority scholars for academic appointments at major research universities. It supports fellows conducting education research and provides mentoring and guidance toward the completion of their doctoral studies.
Award Period
Each fellowship award is for 1 year, beginning July 1, 2017 or later, and is nonrenewable. This fellowship program is intended as a write-up fellowship. Fellowships are awarded for doctoral dissertation research conducted under faculty sponsorship in any accredited university in the United States.
Eligibility
Eligible graduate students for the AERA Minority Dissertation Fellowship in Education Research will be at the writing stage of their dissertation by the beginning of the fellowship. The dissertation study should focus on an education research topic such as high stakes testing; ethnic studies/curriculum; tracking; STEM development; measurement of achievement and opportunity gaps; English language learners; or bullying and restorative justice. Applicants can come from graduate programs and departments in education research, the humanities, or social or behavioral science disciplinary or interdisciplinary fields, such as economics, political science, psychology, or sociology.
Fellows are required to provide proof of advancement to candidacy at the beginning of the award period. Applicants must work full-time on their dissertations and course requirements and should be in the writing stage of their dissertation. This program is open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents who are members of racial and ethnic groups historically underrepresented in higher education, specifically, African Americans, Alaskan Natives, American Indians, Asian Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, and Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islanders.

COEHD Faculty Research Awards
2016-2017 Academic Year
Overview
The COEHD Faculty Research Awards Committee is now accepting research grant proposals for the 2016-2017 academic year. Please read these guidelines carefully.
The primary purpose of the Faculty Research Awards program is to provide priority funding to conceptually and methodologically well-designed research proposals from junior faculty in the form of seed grants to further develop and enhance their research agendas. The Committee is accepting research proposals with budgets up to $5000.
Senior faculty may be included in collaborative proposals where the lead is taken by a junior faculty member(s) and senior faculty are collaborators in the research. It is hoped that the Faculty Research Awards will provide the impetus for future, and much larger, research efforts supported from external funding sources. Recipients will create a poster display of their scholarly findings and will turn in a final financial report at the end of the award period.
Guidelines for Research Proposals
· All tenure-track faculty are eligible to apply, except those who received a COEHD Faculty Research Award during the 2015-2016 academic year.
· Adjunct faculty may be included in proposals. However, only tenure-track faculty can serve as Principal Investigators.
· Preference will be given to conceptually and methodologically well-designed proposals with potential for publication or grant application.
· Applicants wishing to build on previously funded research must distinguish how the proposed research builds on rather than duplicates previously funded activities.
· Proposals must adhere to all formatting guidelines, including provision of a “blind” copy, outlined below. Those that do not will be eliminated from further review.
· All funds must be spent during the current fiscal year and all funds must be exhausted by July 31, 2017. Any unused funds after that date will be swept by the Dean’s Office.

Criteria for Assessing Research Grant Proposals
* Clearly stated purpose of the study
* Research questions that link both theoretical framework and methodology
* Clearly defined theoretical framework and methodology
* Clear indication of potential contribution to one’s field
* Articulated goals for future grant activity
* Clearly defined timeline for project activities
* Clearly defined use of project funds
Budget
Reasonable and necessary expenditures related to the research project are eligible for funding (i.e., travel to collect data, conduct research, and/or collaborate with other researchers; data collection instruments, etc.). However, there are certain limitations. Funds cannot be used for: (1) faculty salary, (2) food items, and (3) travel to disseminate findings at conferences. Lastly, if you need items such as voice recorders, video recorders or similar supplies, please check to see if they are available through your Department before requesting them in your budget. If you are requesting equipment and/or supplies that are not available in the department, provide a justification for their need.
Letter of Intent – The first step in applying for the COEHD Faculty Research Awards is to notify us of your intent to apply. LOIs should include your name, working title, and estimated budget. LOIs should be emailed to COEHDFacultyResearch(a)utsa.edu<mailto:COEHDFacultyResearch@utsa.edu> by September 26, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. You must submit the LOI by the deadline in order to be eligible to submit the full proposal. Upon receipt of your LOI, you will receive further instructions regarding CAYUSE routing and budgets.
Research Grant Proposal Instructions
Full Proposal - Your proposal should consist of the following five sections: Cover Page, Project Narrative, Budget, Budget Justification, and an Appendix. Detailed instructions on what to include in each of these sections is outlined below. Following creation of this full proposal, you will need to create a “blind” copy of the proposal, which will be free from personally identifiable information and will be provided to the committee for blind review (see instructions below)*. On the e-mail subject line, please type COEHD Faculty Research Award Application.
Cover Page: Includes Title of Project, PI Name, Phone Number, and Email Address
Project Narrative – limited to three pages-(references may be added in addition to the three-page limit), single-spaced with one inch margins, Times New Roman or Arial, no smaller than 11 point font, and should include the following:
· Statement of purpose
· Research questions
· Theoretical and methodological approach
· Contribution to one’s field
· Articulated goals for future grant activity
· Project timeline
Budget: The proposed budget should adhere to College guidelines. Please work with Jesse Hernandez to develop a project budget using UTSA’s approved Excel budget spreadsheet which will be provided upon receipt of the LOI.
Budget Justification: Provide a rationale for each item listed in your budget request.
Appendix – Include references and any tables and figures in an appendix. The appendix should be no more than 2 pages.
Submission Process
After you have finalized all the required proposal components (Cover page, Narrative, Budget, Budget Justification, Appendix), combine them into one single pdf document and save it as “LastName_FirstName_ID”. Then go back to your original documents and redact all personally identifiable information. Once that is completed, create another single pdf with your redacted documents and save it as “BLIND_LastName_FirstName”. Both documents are required for successful submission. The Author Identified version will be routed for approvals through the CAYUSE system and the “blind” copy will be given to the review committee. The University of Texas at San Antonio formally launches a new funding opportunity in response to the UT Chancellor's Texas Prospect Initiative- UTSA's Achieving Literacy Initiative (ALI) Program.
The ALI program, a joint initiative between the Office of the President, Office of the Vice President for Research (VPR), and the College of Education and Human Development (COEHD) at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), will provide seed grants to support new areas of research for faculty at UTSA. The primary goal is to assemble preliminary data that can be used to seek extramural funding. Approximately two grants for a maximum of $10,000 each may be awarded. The ALI program has specific goals with minimal stipulations and it is anticipated that faculty will build cross-disciplinary research partnerships through this program.
Objectives of this program are to provide seed funding that:
* Promotes an increase in literacy achievement for underserved populations in the San Antonio area (with a particular focus on K - 12 literacy).
* Promotes innovation in literacy education and literacy research.
* Draws upon community partnerships.

On September 8 and 9 UNESCO will hold a conference in Paris to honor these efforts and disseminate prizes for achievements in Literacy.

Dear COEHD Faculty,
Greetings from the Honors College! As the new Dean of Honors, I would like to thank each of you for the warm welcome that I have received at UTSA. This is a great community. I am truly honored to have been asked to contribute to advancing our mission and leading Honors.
The Honors College intends to play a pivotal role in the future successes of UTSA. We will enhance the curriculum in ways that intentionally develop our students as civic-minded, globally sophisticated intellectuals and professionals. Our goal will be to recruit, develop, and graduate individuals who are intentional in their life pursuits, dexterous in thought, equitable in actions, and eager to develop the skills and acquire the knowledge that will empower them to strengthen their communities.
A top-tier Honors College requires the active participation of you, our faculty. Over the course of the coming years, there will be many ways for you to contribute to the success of our endeavors. These will include opportunities to participate in shared governance, teach high-impact courses, engage in curriculum creation, and assist in student recruiting, to name just a few. For Honors, leadership means making opportunities for others; so we hope you will assist us in leading the College by enhancing the opportunities that we make available to our students and each other.
Honors currently has two immediate needs from you. First, we are in the process of building an internal Honors Advisory Board. Members of this committee will assist Honors by acting as the primary advocates to and representatives of their home Colleges and areas. Meeting monthly, this Board will act as the strategic leadership body for the College. Board members will offer significant input into the future direction of Honors, including its curriculum, policies, and culture. All members are expected to be actively committed to building a true destination college, dedicated to engaging students in experiential, interdisciplinary, high-impact education. The College will also be implementing a new admission process for current UTSA students who are Honors eligible. This process will include interviews by our faculty. We are seeking 18 faculty members to volunteer to interview potential honors students on Wednesday, September 21. We would ask that volunteers be available for an entire shift on that day. Shifts run from 8-noon and noon-5. Lunch and training will be provided on the day of the interviews.
