Vincent D. Carales, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies (ELPS), was selected by the American Council on Education (ACE) as one of the four graduate research associates for the 2016-2017 academic year. As a graduate research associate, he will work with the Center for Policy Research and Strategy (CPRS) to design, produce, and disseminate higher education research centered on the areas of diversity and equity, public finance, and transformational leadership. Carales will contribute to various ongoing projects that relate to these key areas in order to disseminate information in formats easily accessible to higher education policymakers, leaders, and practitioners. For Soledad Nuñez, the Narciso Martinez Cultural Arts Center isn’t just a job. Since she was 2, it’s filled much of her life. “It’s a big part of who I am,” said Nuñez, the center’s coordinator. “It’s something I’m very passionate about.” In 1991, her father Rogelio Nuñez co-founded the arts center, naming it for Narciso Martinez, the master accordionist from La Paloma known as the father of conjunto music. Last year, Soledad took over as the arts center’s coordinator, overseeing operations and lining up events. A 2007 graduate of San Benito High School, she holds a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Our Lady of the Lake University and a master’s degree in bi-cultural studies from the University of Texas at San Antonio.

At first, Ileana Gonzalez of Houston hoped to go to Texas A&M University—College Station – until she visited campus. After attending a primarily white high school, one of her requirements was greater diversity, and the level she observed – the student body is about 60 percent white – didn't meet her target. So she took a trip to the University of Texas—San Antonio and found it "very welcoming" and with a mix – just over one-quarter white – that felt just right. Her time at UTSA, where she majored in business and entrepreneurship, culminated this year with a stint as president of the student body.

On behalf of Southwest Voter Registration Education Project (SVREP), we request the opportunity to partner with you to register eligible students to vote. The voter registration deadline is October 11th.
SVREP is interested in taking 5 to 10 minutes per class to register students eligible to vote in the classroom.
In 2012, in partnership with UTSA, we registered 7,200 students; in 2014, 2,600 students were registered to vote; and this spring 2,300 students voted early at the UTSA designated early vote site.

Dear Friends of the Women's Studies Institute and Women's Studies Program,
On behalf of Dr. Sonia Saldívar-Hull, Director of UTSA's Women's Studies Institute and Women's Studies Program, I invite you to our upcoming reception. Each year, the Women's Studies Institute and Women's Studies Program host a welcome reception and program that honors our Women's Studies majors and minors as well as new women faculty to UTSA. Women's Studies students will have the opportunity to briefly speak and the new faculty will introduce themselves and give a description of their research and academic interests. The WSI staff will highlight some of the exciting upcoming events that we will be sponsoring this academic year. Nominations for Regents' Outstanding Teaching Awards 2017

Dear COEHD Faculty,
The U. T. System is seeking nominations for the 2017 Regents' Outstanding Teaching Awards. Per Steve Leslie, Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, "The awards will recognize faculty who deliver the highest quality of undergraduate instruction, demonstrate their commitment to teaching, and have a history and promising future of sustained excellence with undergraduate teaching." Tenured, tenure-track, and non-tenure-track award recipients will receive $25,000 each.
The University of Texas at San Antonio will submit a cadre of tenured, tenure-track, and non-tenure-track/adjunct nominees for consideration of the award. Therefore, each college will submit a maximum of the following numbers of nominees:

* Nominees must have at least three years teaching experience at the university level.
The nomination of strong candidates who may already have received teaching awards or teaching award nominations is encouraged.
Below you will find the COEHD timeline for the submission/review process. As you can see, the timeframe is very tight and the awards are quite large. Therefore, it is important that we adhere to the timeline.
The nomination process will be conducted in two phases:
Phase I:
1) Nomination packets should be submitted to Liliana Gutierrez (liliana.gutierrez(a)utsa.edu<mailto:liliana.gutierrez@utsa.edu>) in the COEHD-Office of the Dean no later than Monday, October 17, 2016.
All nomination packets must contain the following materials for Phase I review:
1. A completed application form (6 pages maximum) (attached),
2. A CV that emphasizes teaching accomplishments (maximum: 15 pages) and
3. Written statement delineating their philosophy of teaching (maximum: 3 pages, 12 pt. font).
2) Each college will identify their nominees and email their names to Dr. Nancy Martin by Wednesday, October 26, 2016. All notified nominees will submit their materials for Phase I review via email to Dr. Nancy Martin no later than 8:00am on Tuesday, November 29, 2016.
Phase II: The UTSA ROTA Selection Committee will determine the University's cohort of nominees who will develop a full e-portfolio that will be submitted for consideration at the U.T. System level. COEHD Faculty Research Awards
2016-2017 Academic Year
Overview
The COEHD Faculty Research Awards Committee is now accepting research grant proposals for the 2016-2017 academic year. Please read these guidelines carefully.
The primary purpose of the Faculty Research Awards program is to provide priority funding to conceptually and methodologically well-designed research proposals from junior faculty in the form of seed grants to further develop and enhance their research agendas. The Committee is accepting research proposals with budgets up to $5000.
Senior faculty may be included in collaborative proposals where the lead is taken by a junior faculty member(s) and senior faculty are collaborators in the research. It is hoped that the Faculty Research Awards will provide the impetus for future, and much larger, research efforts supported from external funding sources. Recipients will create a poster display of their scholarly findings and will turn in a final financial report at the end of the award period.
Guidelines for Research Proposals
· All tenure-track faculty are eligible to apply, except those who received a COEHD Faculty Research Award during the 2015-2016 academic year.
· Adjunct faculty may be included in proposals. However, only tenure-track faculty can serve as Principal Investigators.
· Preference will be given to conceptually and methodologically well-designed proposals with potential for publication or grant application.
· Applicants wishing to build on previously funded research must distinguish how the proposed research builds on rather than duplicates previously funded activities.
· Proposals must adhere to all formatting guidelines, including provision of a “blind” copy, outlined below. Those that do not will be eliminated from further review.
· All funds must be spent during the current fiscal year and all funds must be exhausted by July 31, 2017. Any unused funds after that date will be swept by the Dean’s Office.

Criteria for Assessing Research Grant Proposals
* Clearly stated purpose of the study
* Research questions that link both theoretical framework and methodology
* Clearly defined theoretical framework and methodology
* Clear indication of potential contribution to one’s field
* Articulated goals for future grant activity
* Clearly defined timeline for project activities
* Clearly defined use of project funds
Budget
Reasonable and necessary expenditures related to the research project are eligible for funding (i.e., travel to collect data, conduct research, and/or collaborate with other researchers; data collection instruments, etc.). However, there are certain limitations. Funds cannot be used for: (1) faculty salary, (2) food items, and (3) travel to disseminate findings at conferences. Lastly, if you need items such as voice recorders, video recorders or similar supplies, please check to see if they are available through your Department before requesting them in your budget. If you are requesting equipment and/or supplies that are not available in the department, provide a justification for their need.
Letter of Intent – The first step in applying for the COEHD Faculty Research Awards is to notify us of your intent to apply. LOIs should include your name, working title, and estimated budget. LOIs should be emailed to COEHDFacultyResearch(a)utsa.edu<mailto:COEHDFacultyResearch@utsa.edu> by September 26, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. You must submit the LOI by the deadline in order to be eligible to submit the full proposal. Upon receipt of your LOI, you will receive further instructions regarding CAYUSE routing and budgets.
Research Grant Proposal Instructions
Full Proposal - Your proposal should consist of the following five sections: Cover Page, Project Narrative, Budget, Budget Justification, and an Appendix. Detailed instructions on what to include in each of these sections is outlined below. Following creation of this full proposal, you will need to create a “blind” copy of the proposal, which will be free from personally identifiable information and will be provided to the committee for blind review (see instructions below)*. On the e-mail subject line, please type COEHD Faculty Research Award Application.
Cover Page: Includes Title of Project, PI Name, Phone Number, and Email Address
Project Narrative – limited to three pages-(references may be added in addition to the three-page limit), single-spaced with one inch margins, Times New Roman or Arial, no smaller than 11 point font, and should include the following:
· Statement of purpose
· Research questions
· Theoretical and methodological approach
· Contribution to one’s field
· Articulated goals for future grant activity
· Project timeline
Budget: The proposed budget should adhere to College guidelines. Pleasework with Jesse Hernandez to develop a project budget using UTSA’s approved Excel budget spreadsheet which will be provided upon receipt of the LOI.
Budget Justification: Provide a rationale for each item listed in your budget request.
Appendix – Include references and any tables and figures in an appendix. The appendix should be no more than 2 pages.
Submission Process
After you have finalized all the required proposal components (Cover page, Narrative, Budget, Budget Justification, Appendix), combine them into one single pdf document and save it as “LastName_FirstName_ID”. Then go back to your original documents and redact all personally identifiable information. Once that is completed, create another single pdf with your redacted documents and save it as “BLIND_LastName_FirstName”. Both documents are required for successful submission. The Author Identified version will be routed for approvals through the CAYUSE system and the “blind” copy will be given to the review committee. Center for Civic Engagement and the City of San Antonio Challenge Grant Center for Civic Engagement
Through the generosity of Councilman Ron Nirenberg and the city’s discretionary funds, the Center for Civic Engagement launched the COSA Challenge Grant last month. This grant funds service-learning projects for students, groups, classes and RSO’s. The challenge is to do a creative community project that benefits a nonprofit agency and/or the population they serve in our local San Antonio community. Grant awards are up to $500 per individual and a $1000 for a group project. Students, groups and organizations must have a faculty advisor and a nonprofit agency already selected for the project. In an effort to become a Tier One institution, the University of Texas at San Antonio is repositioning its programs to strengthen its role as a research institution, officials said. As such, the center formerly known as La Plaza de Lectura will be launched today as the Center for the Inquiry of Transformative Literacies. While it will continue its work to improve child literacy through tutoring and instructional training, the center will also focus on data collection and revamping its research team. “As a research center, we can funnel our resources not only into serving children, which we will continue to do, but disseminating our research that is helpful to parents and children,” said Misty Sailors, director of the center.
