The Office of Teacher Education Services hosted the Spring 2017 Teacher Induction Ceremony on Wednesday, April 26 on the UTSA Main Campus. The event, which marked the end of clinical teaching for more than 180 new teachers, included a short video, featuring students from the Departments of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching, Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, and Kinesiology, Health and Nutrition, remarks from Firstmark Credit Union and COEHD Dean, Dr. Margo DelliCarpini. The Policy Studies Center is hosting its first statewide Latino Policy Symposium to address public policies that contribute to the well-being of Latino families. The theme is Path to Power and Prosperity. This working summit provides an opportunity for public agencies, non-profits to review the impact of local and state policies targeting education, labor/employment/housing, and health and human services. While Latino advocates have made policy achievements, there is still a need to invest in schools, increase jobs and wages, increase homeownership, and improve health and neighborhood environments to help strengthen Latino families and provide pathways to economic mobility.
Symposium deliberations include topics of Political Power, Applied policy analysis support across issues, Pro-active development of policy proposals (state and local), Communications network that informs, educates, and supports organized advocacy

Vending machines are selling increasingly novel items: cupcakes, live crabs and fresh baguettes. In China, you can now add HIV testing kits to that list. China is piloting the use of vending machines that sell HIV testing kits on university campuses. The goal is to reach students who may be reluctant to go to a clinic for a test because of the stigma of contracting HIV.

Post-secondary institutions today are as diverse as the cities they’re located in. But diversity has its challenges, especially when it comes to keeping students engaged and promoting an inclusive student experience. As college graduation rates are declining, it is more important than ever for higher education institutions to focus on retention strategies. While many major universities talk about improving graduation rates, University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) is actually doing something about it. According to an article in UTSA Today, UTSA received a five-year, $3.25 million Title V collaborative grant from the U.S. Department of Education in 2015 to create the PIVOT for Academic Success Program.

We are looking for a potential candidate to send to the Emerging Engagement Scholars Workshop in the fall. Applicants should be: Doctoral students or junior faculty members with an interest in community engagement and engaged scholarship, and/or who are involved or interested in research that contributes to their discipline while making a positive impact on external stakeholders.
The Center for Civic Engagement will support faculty/doctoral student travel to the workshop for a commitment to support efforts of engaged scholarship on campus upon their return in academic year 2017-18. Deadline to apply is fast approaching on Friday, April 28th. Please spread the word or let me know of any potential candidates that I can reach out to directly.

A Pre-conference Event of the Engagement Scholarship Consortium Annual Conference
September 24-25, 2017
Birmingham, Alabama
This intensive professional development program provides advanced doctoral students and early career faculty with background literature, facilitated discussion, mentoring, and presentations designed to increase their knowledge and enhance their practice of community engaged scholarship. Participation is limited, and interested applicants must be nominated by their faculty advisor/mentor or department chairperson.

APPLICANTS FOR THIS PROGRAM SHOULD BE:
Doctoral students or junior faculty members with an interest in community engagement and engaged scholarship, and/or who are involved or interested in research that contributes to their discipline while making a positive impact on external stakeholders.
APPLICANTS MUST ALSO DEMONSTRATE:
· A desire for new learning about engaged scholarship.
· An interest in working with faculty across disciplines to explore and learn more about how engaged scholarship might be carried out.
· The capacity to effectively communicate the results of their research to public, academic, and other external audiences.
The application process for the Emerging Engagement Scholars Workshop is competitive, with only 15-20 participants selected each year.
WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHTS:
· Master classes on the foundations of community-engaged scholarship, and practical themes such as building an engagement dossier, etc.
· Critical reviews of participants' proposals of community-engaged research projects.
· Panel discussion with faculty, administrators and cooperative extension staff on disciplinary, institutional type, and community partner considerations for engaged scholarship.
· Small group work with a designated faculty mentor (includes discussion about methods and theories, with a focus on each individual participant's proposed engaged scholarship).
· Panel discussion with journal editors from peer-reviewed publications that publish engaged scholarship.
· Panel discussion on the challenges, successes, and professional pathways related to engaged scholarship.
Through the generous support of its Board of Directors, the Engagement Scholarship Consortium Conference provides registration scholarships to all Workshop participants, so that they can take full advantage of the larger conference program.

With AERA in town, UTSA has organized several workshops for the community put on by AERA Division J (Postsecondary) scholars with local co-presenters. One of the workshops is on undocumented students/families and college (Saturday, April 29, 1 pm). The attached flier is for the undocumented student workshop. Could you please share information about this workshop with your networks in town? There currently are quite a few remaining slots for this session, which is scheduled in the Aula Canaria of the UTSA Downtown Campus.

· Deaf Education in South Texas (Monday, May 1, 9 am)
