New Summer Course in C&I
by Zaid Haddad
Colleagues-
Salutations! I want to share (again) with you some information about a new class that I am offering this summer. The course is entitled C&I 7153 Critical Multicultural Education (CME) in Urban Settings and it will have its inaugural offering in Summer 2017 L Session (July12-August 09<http://airmail.calendar/2017-07-12%2012:00:00%20CDT>). This course is designed for anyone with an interest in Critical Theories/Pedagogies, Multicultural and Social Justice Education, and Culturally Relevant Pedagogies. We will spend our time engaging with foundational readings and current research in the field of CME as well as allowing each student to connect this work to their current and/or aspirant contexts as educators and school leaders.
As we approach the end of the semester and we are advising graduate students for their summer course load, please consider this course as a suggestion. If you know any graduate students in your programs that you think would benefit form such a course please share with them the attached flyer or have them direct their inquiries in an email<mailto:zaid.haddad@utsa.edu>. Have a great rest of the week and thank you all in advance for your support.
Sincerely,
Dr. Haddad

“Tell them about how you’re never really a whole person if you remain silent, because there’s always that one little piece inside you that wants to be spoken out, and if you keep ignoring it, it gets madder and madder and hotter and hotter, and if you don’t speak it out one day it will just up and punch you in the mouth from inside.” –Audre Lorde, recalling her daughter’s words of advice.

After months of cyberbullying, the 16-year-old Alamo Heights High School student took his own life in January 2016. His parents created David’s Legacy, a foundation aimed at raising awareness about cyberbullying and suicide. And now the San Antonio family is working with a state senator on a bill to make cyberbullying a crime in Texas when it leads to injury or suicide and the victim is a minor.

Temporary DT Dean's Office Changes
by Margo DelliCarpini
Dear COEHD Faculty,
Effective Monday, April 17, 2017, Melissa Lichtenberg who currently works at the DT Dean's Office, will be working at the Main Campus Dean's Office.
This temporary assignment is a result of the current hiring freeze. Priscilla Marquez who currently works at the Dean's Office at the Main Campus has accepted another position at UTSA and her last day with COEHD will be Friday, April 21, 2017.
Therefore, Melissa will begin cross-training with Priscilla on Monday. We hope that the vacant position can be filled soon and that Melissa can resume her regular duties at the DT campus.
In the meantime, the DT Dean's Office will be open Monday-Friday from 2:00pm to 5:00pm.
Although Melissa will not be there, faculty not housed at the DT campus but who are teaching DT this semester, may still go in to use the copy machine and prepare their materials for class.
You may still email Melissa to reserve the conference room on the third floor, MB 3.110.
Chelsey Hernandez, the current work-student student will be available on certain hours to assist with copy requests. Please submit copy or assistance requests at least 5 work days in advance so she may have enough time to complete them.
The COEHD Graduate studies office will still remain in the Dean's Office suite but do not serve as faculty administrative support.
We hope that this period of self-service will be short and appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
Please contact me if you have any questions. Thank you.
Best,
Margo

FW: Space Audit
by Margo DelliCarpini
Dear Colleagues,
We are currently engaged in a COEHD space audit. We have had a number of new appointments at the Associate Dean levels and incoming new faculty. We are looking to maximize utilization and ensure that everyone has appropriate space. If you are directly affected, we will reach out to you directly or through your department chairperson. The main goals are as follows:
1. Adequate Faculty space ( new hires)
2. Director level positions having their own office
3. Associate Deans in their own office ( we have two new ADs)
4. Adjunct space ( shared space)
5. Part time positions sharing space
6. Units located appropriately and logically
This is a bit of a puzzle so please bear with us as we determine the final configurations . Any relocations would be phased in with a target date for completed moves of the beginning of the fall 2017 semester.
Best,
Margo
